- 2. _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n
-
- Please carefully read these instructions in this chapter and
- the information in the following chapters.
-
- In the information below, IRIX 6.5.XXXXXXXX refers to this current
- IRIX release.
-
- This chapter contains important installation information for
- the IRIX 6.5.XXXXXXXX Execution Environment product.
-
- The IRIX 6.5.XXXXXXXX Execution Environment product (_e_o_e) contains
- foundation level software that requires a miniroot
- installation when upgrading from older releases up through
- IRIX 6.4. Because of changes made to the IRIX 6.5.5
- installation tools to support overlays, upgrading to IRIX
- 6.5.XXXXXXXX from IRIX 6.5, IRIX 6.5 SE, IRIX 6.5.1 IRIX 6.5.2,
- IRIX 6.5.3 or IRIX 6.5.4 also requires a miniroot
- installation unless you first install patchSG0003700 (or
- successor patches) from the _i_n_s_t_a_l_l_t_o_o_l_s directory of the
- IRIX 6.5.XXXXXXXX Installation Tools and Overlays CD.
- PatchSG0003700, which contains the IRIX 6.5.5 installation
- tools, is not required on upgrades from IRIX 6.5.5 or later.
-
- If you install patchSG0003700 or are running IRIX 6.5.5 or
- later, you can use a regular "live" installation to upgrade
- to IRIX 6.5.XXXXXXXX. Failure to use the IRIX 6.5.5 or later
- installation tools to install IRIX 6.5.XXXXXXXX may cause damaging
- installation results, or may result in many installation
- conflicts while running _i_n_s_t or _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r (_s_w_m_g_r).

-
- When upgrading to IRIX 6.5.XXXXXXXX, the IRIX 6.5.XXXXXXXX Installation
- Tools CD should be inserted first. After the Installation
- Tools CD has been read, _i_n_s_t will prompt for another CD to
- be inserted. To reduce the number of conflicts that need to
- be dealt with manually, you must insert the remaining IRIX
- 6.5.XXXXXXXX CDs (if any). If upgrading from a pre-6.5 release,
- the base 6.5 CDs and any optional 6.5 CDs must also be
- inserted so that the product information for each can be
- read before the installation is started. Once the
- installation is started, _i_n_s_t will prompt the user when
- another CD is required.
-
- When performing an upgrade using _i_n_s_t, make sure all the CDs
- have been opened, and then issue the _k_e_e_p * and _i_n_s_t_a_l_l
- _s_t_a_n_d_a_r_d selection commands. In _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r, after
- opening all the CDs, select _C_u_s_t_o_m_i_z_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n mode, and
- then choose _S_e_l_e_c_t _R_e_c_o_m_m_e_n_d_e_d _U_p_g_r_a_d_e_s from the _I_n_s_t_a_l_l

-
- In contrast to versions of IRIX prior to 6.4, all applicable
- patch products will be selected for default installation.
- The selected patches will apply to either installed base
- products or distribution base products that are marked for
- install.
-
- _I_n_s_t and _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r now support a new type of
- installation product called an _o_v_e_r_l_a_y. Overlays, like
- patches, are products that only contain the subset of files
- from the base release that have been changed to fix a
- specific problem or set of problems. Unlike patches,
- however, the files that are being replaced are not saved.
- Therefore, it is not possible to remove an overlay without
- reinstalling the original base product. The name of the
- overlay product is the same as the name of the product it
- will upgrade. Thus, an overlay for the eoe product will
- also have the product name eoe. Two distinct types of
- overlays are supported: maintenance overlays and feature
- overlays. Maintenance overlays contain bug fixes and
- minimal support for new hardware. Feature overlays contain
- bug fixes, support for new hardware, and new software and
- hardware features.
-
- Because different overlay products often depend on one
- another, these two overlay types may not be mixed. Thus, a
- system may have feature overlay products installed or
- maintenance overlay products installed but not both. When
- _i_n_s_t or _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r first encounters a distribution
- containing overlay products, the user will be asked to
- choose between maintenance overlays and feature overlays.
- Once a choice has been made, products of the other overlay
- type will not be displayed to the user. See the _s_t_r_e_a_m and
- _o_v_e_r_l_a_y__m_o_d_e preferences within _i_n_s_t or _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r for
- more information on overlays.
-
- 2.1 _K_n_o_w_n__P_r_o_b_l_e_m_s__a_n_d__W_o_r_k_a_r_o_u_n_d_s__w_i_t_h__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n
-
- +o When performing a clean installation of 6.5 + 6.5.XXXXXXXX,
- all default overlay products will initially be selected
- for install. If the user chooses not to install from
- all the 6.5 base CDs, there may be some 6.5.XXXXXXXX overlay
- products selected for installation for which there is
- no corresponding 6.5 product in the distribution.
- These overlay products are uninstallable and may be
- deselected with the _i_n_s_t command _k_e_e_p
- _i_n_c_o_m_p_l_e_t_e_o_v_e_r_l_a_y_s. Failure to deselect these products
- will result in installation conflicts.

-
-
-
- +o When performing a live (non-miniroot) downgrade from
- the _f_e_a_t_u_r_e _s_t_r_e_a_m of 6.5.XXXXXXXX to 6.5, the user will be
- prompted to continue the install from the miniroot. It
- is not necessary to complete this install from the
- miniroot. To disable this erroneous behavior, set the
- _l_i_v_e__i_n_s_t_a_l_l preference to _o_n before typing _g_o in _i_n_s_t
- or pressing _S_t_a_r_t in _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r.
-
- +o When using _i_n_s_t keywords such as _p_r_e_r_e_q_s or _s_t_a_n_d_a_r_d to
- make installation selections, it is possible that these
- keywords will not resolve to any products, resulting in
- a confusing _i_n_s_t message. For example, the
- installation command _i_n_s_t_a_l_l _p_r_e_r_e_q_s may result in this
- message : _N_o _m_a_t_c_h_e_s _f_o_r "_p_r_e_r_e_q_s" _w_e_r_e _f_o_u_n_d. This
- simply indicates that there were no products in the
- current distribution that would resolve any of the
- existing prereq conflicts. It is not an error.
-
- +o If the _v_e_r_b_o_s_e preference is set and a pre-6.5 version
- of _i_n_s_t or _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r is used to install the 6.5
- images, _i_n_s_t or _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r may emit warnings
- about an unknown attribute _n_o_r_q_s. These messages are
- harmless and will not affect the install.
-
- +o Initiating automatic miniroot installs from _m_u_l_t_i-_u_s_e_r
- mode may fail on certain machines with Toshiba 5701
- CDROM drives. The failure will occur when attempting
- to boot from the CDROM drive and a message will be
- displayed on the textport stating that the _C_D_R_O_M _d_e_v_i_c_e
- _i_s _n_o_t _r_e_a_d_y. If this occurs, a standard miniroot
- install must be used to install 6.5.
-
- +o Initiating automatic miniroot installs from _m_u_l_t_i-_u_s_e_r
- mode may fail on certain Octane machines. The failure
- will occur when attempting to boot from the CDROM drive
- and a message will be displayed on the textport stating
- that there was an _e_x_e_c_u_t_e _f_o_r_m_a_t _e_r_r_o_r. If this
- occurs, a standard miniroot install must be used to
- install 6.5.
-
- +o If installing from multiple CDs using a single _r_e_m_o_t_e
- CDROM drive, it is highly recommended that the CDs be
- mounted at /_C_D_R_O_M on the remote system. This specific
- mount point enables _i_n_s_t or _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r to
- correctly prompt the user when to switch CDs on the
- remote machine. Failure to mount remote CDs at /CDROM
- will result in a confusing error message from _i_n_s_t or
- _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r regarding a missing file when in
- reality a CD switch on the remote system is required.
- If remote CDs are mounted at /CDROM, an interrupt menu
- will appear and the user will be prompted for the
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- - 4 -
-
-
-
- correct CD when a switch is required. At this point,
- simply insert the correct CD into the remote CDROM
- drive and enter _r_e_t_r_y from the interrupt menu.
-
- +o If _i_n_s_t is displaying graphical progress dialogs in the
- miniroot, there is a remote chance that the
- installation may be interrupted by moving the mouse
- unexpectedly. If this occurs, continue the
- installation from the interrupt menu by choosing the
- _c_o_n_t_i_n_u_e option.
-
- +o _I_n_s_t may initially report that there is enough
- available disk space to complete the installation, but
- when the _g_o command is given, reports that there is not
- enough disk space. This is because the latter check is
- much more detailed. Use the _i_n_s_t command _h_e_l_p
- _s_p_a_c_e_e_r_r_o_r for more information.
-
- +o If you have multiple filesystems on your system, _i_n_s_t
- may report that there is not enough space on one
- particular filesystem. Try using the _v_i_e_w _f_i_l_e_s_y_s_t_e_m_s
- command in _i_n_s_t. This will provide more detailed disk
- space information when the _l_i_s_t and _s_t_e_p commands are
- used.
-
- +o The _i_n_s_t _c_o_n_f_l_i_c_t_s command (or the _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _M_a_n_a_g_e_r
- _C_o_n_f_l_i_c_t_s window) may report that there are no
- conflicts, even though installation conflicts are
- listed when you try to quit. To see the conflicts
- before quitting, set the _d_e_l_a_y__c_o_n_f_l_i_c_t_s preference to
- _o_f_f.
-
- +o _I_n_s_t cannot always install from CDROM unless running
- with root permissions. To work around, run as root;
- or, before the installation, make sure that the CD is
- already mounted by allowing mediad to mount the CD or,
- if mediad is disabled, using the _m_o_u_n_t(_1_M) command.
-
- +o _I_n_s_t may generate a conflict if you try to upgrade a
- product (1) that is a prerequisite for some other
- product, and (2) whose name changes as part of the
- upgrade. To work around, issue the _i_n_s_t command _s_e_t
- _r_u_l_e_s_o_v_e_r_r_i_d_e _o_n, which allows the installation to
- proceed despite the conflict.
-
- +o When you issue the _q_u_i_t command from _i_n_s_t, it
- automatically recomputes the QUICKSTART information for
- any executables and shared objects (dso's) just
- installed. See the manual entry _r_q_s(_1) for details.

- Occasionally _i_n_s_t may report errors that occur during
- this phase. These errors may cause some applications
- to start up less quickly but otherwise these errors are
- harmless.

- If you have a clean system with FDDI and Ethernet, that is,
- with no networking information, such as /_e_t_c/_h_o_s_t_s or
- /_e_t_c/_s_y_s__i_d on the disk, and you boot miniroot over the
- network, you will be prompted with some of these questions:
-
- What is the hostname (system name) of your machine?
-
- What network interface would you like to configure?
-
- What is the network address of <your system name>?
-
- What is the netmask for <IP address>?
-
- In general, you will be prompted with these
- questions on any system containing other optional
- network products that has no networking information.
- If you are unsure of the network interfaces or
- networking was still not started correctly, you can

- Use _r_n_s_0 or _i_p_g_0 instead of _x_p_i_0 if appropriate and
- use _e_t_0, _e_c_0, or _e_n_p_0 instead of _e_f_0 if appropriate.
-
- When starting a network miniroot installation from the
- PROM on older systems, you may encounter the error
- "no space left in string table" and the install will
- abort. The usual cause of this message is to have
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- - 6 -
-
-
-
- too many or too long variable name+values defined in
- the PROM storage space (the PROM install dialog
- stores all it's values in the string space). The
- only workaround is to shorten the strings used,
- especially those used to specify remote hostnames
- and paths. This may require using symlinks on the
- boot server to shorten the path to the _s_a file and
- _m_i_n_i_r_o_o_t directory for the network boot process.
